Terra Industries (NYSE: TRA) is a North American and U.K. producer and marketer of nitrogen products, serving agricultural and industrial markets. The company was founded in 1964 and is headquartered in Sioux City, IA.
Nitrogen is an essential plant nutrient necessary in most fertilizer products. Anhydrous ammonia made from natural gas is converted to nitric acid, ammonium nitrate, and urea for formulation into fertilizer products. Some of these materials are used by other industries but most is used in fertilizer formulations.
Terra Industries owns 75% of Terra Nitrogen (ticker: TNH), a master limited partnership with one nitrogen manufacturing facility in Verdigris, Oklahoma, and terminal operations in Blair, Nebraska and Pekin, Illinois.
Terra Industries also owns and operates five other North American manufacturing facilities (Courtright, Ontario; Sioux City, Iowa; Woodward, Oklahoma; Yazoo City, Mississippi and a recently restarted ammonia plant in Donaldsonville, LA), and has a 50% interest in an ammonia facility in Trinidad and 50% interest in GrowHow UK Ltd., a United Kingdom joint venture, the leading producer of ammonium nitrate (AN) in UK. Terra also has a deep-water terminal in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, and 50% interest in Houston Ammonia Terminal near Pasadena, Texas.
Terra leads the market in the manufacture and sale of the higher-margin urea/ammonium nitrate (UAN) (40 % of US manaufacturing capacity) and is a leader in AN.
The company also produces methanol, a chemical intermediate, at Woodward, OK.
In 2010, Terra Industries was acquired by CF Industries.
