Shares trading hands generates volume. Keep track of that number over a day and you'll have the daily volume. Keep track of that over a month or so, and take a mean of the daily results, and you arrive at average daily volume.

Most forms of this metric do a 30-day lookback in order to determine what constitutes an average.

Trading volumes have generally risen higher over time, with more capital and more companies on the global stock market. So take it all in all, one would expect average annual trading volume for a stock to trend higher.

The Motley Fool has favored its own metric over time, the [[daily dollar volume]]. We consider this a more interesting number than just average daily ''share'' volume, because daily dollar volume multiplies the share trading volume by the stock's average price. This gives investors a read on how much money is moving through a stock on a given day.
