SUMITOMO CHEMICAL (mu: SMM) Sumitomo Chemical is a large Japanese chemical conglomerate. It was founded in 1913 as a fertilizer manufacturer. The company is organized in five sectors: basic chemicals, petrochemicals and plastics, IT-chemicals, health & crop chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The company has offices in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.
Basic Chemicals: industrial chemicals, synthetic textile fibers, methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer and polymer, aluminum, rubber chemicals, and polymer additives. Products include caprolactam, raw material for Nylon 6, alumina, and resorcinol for tires, wood adhesives and flame retardants.
Petrochemicals and Plastics
IT-chemicals: optical films for liquid crystal displays, photoresists and electronic chemicals for semiconductor manufacturing, super engineering plastics, polyether sulfone, and separators and cathode materials.for lithium batteries.
Health and Crop Chemicals
Health and crop chemicals: crop protection chemicals (insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides), fertilizers, feed additives, household and commercial insecticides (mosquito repellents, termiticides, pyrethrins), methionine, mosquito netting, and active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates including generics. In 2014, Sumitomo acquired the Asana pyrethrin insecticide business from Dupont.
Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma markets Aimix™ (therapeutic agent for hypertension), LONASEN™ (atypical antipsychotic agent), TRERIEF™ (therapeutic agent for Parkinson's disease) and METGLUCO™ (biguanide oral hypoglycemic).
Nihon Medi-Physics manufactures radiopharmaceuticals for PET (positron emission tomography) and SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) useful in diagnosing cancers and implantation seeds for prostate cancer, METASTRON™ injectable, a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical that provides pain relief for cancer patients and SentiProbe™, for detection of early breast cancer and malignant melanoma.

In 2015, Sumitomo announced closure of plants making ethylene and caprolactone in Japan while doubling capacity for separators for lithium batteries.
