Hydraulic fracturing

Hydraulic fracturing, aka fracking or fracing, is a method used to get gas or oil out of the ground. It involves pumping a mix of water, sand, and chemicals into rock to expand the fractures already in the rock, thus increasing flow.

Hydraulic fracturing has allowed oil and gas companies to get more of the substances out of the ground, but critics oppose the potential for groundwater pollution.
