Footnotes are additions to the financial statements of a company, especially the income statement and balance sheet published in the annual report.

Expanded Definition

They explain anything non-standard about the item listed on the statement. Hence, investors are advised to read them carefully. They often are the first indication of some significant circumstance that later becomes a major issue for the company.
