Expanded Definition

In days gone by, the ticker tape could sometimes run hours behind trades occuring on the floor of the exchange--especially on days of panicselling. Hence, traders relying on the ticker tape could not know the actual price when they placed their orders.

Much of that problem has been resolved with modern electronic reporting. But reporting rate continues to be an issue to those who engage in high speed computer trading--usually with servers mounted for instant access to data streams.
