American Stock Exchange
Founded in 1842 in New York City, the American Stock Exchange is one of the three major stock exchanges in the U.S. along with the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq. It was acquired by the Nasdaq in 1998, but still operates as separate exchange.
Until 1921, the American Stock Exchange was known as the Curb Exchange - it still is today referred to as the Curb.
In 2008, AMEX agreed to be acquired by NYSE Euronext for $260 million. The transaction is subject to Securities and Exchange Commission approval and is expected to close in the third quarter of 2008. Whether or not AMEX will remain a brand within the NYSE Euronext portfolio or simply be rolled up into the firms other products has not yet been determined.
